Manual Lymphatic Drainage – Dr Vodder Method
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised treatment designed to support the natural movement of fluid through the lymphatic system.
The method was developed in France in the 1930s by Emil and Estrid Vodder, who studied the lymphatic system and developed a series of light, rhythmic movements to encourage lymph flow. Their method became known as Dr Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage and continues to be taught internationally today.
Using light, slow and rhythmic skin-stretching movements, MLD works with the superficial lymphatic system to encourage lymphatic drainage. It is very different from conventional massage and does not use deep pressure.
What can Manual Lymphatic Drainage help with?
Clients often choose MLD for:
- puffiness and fluid retention
- heavy or tired-feeling legs
- facial puffiness, including around the eyes
- a bloated or congested abdomen
- swelling following periods of inactivity
- swelling and bruising following surgery, once medically appropriate
- gentle support during recovery after illness
- general lymphatic drainage and wellbeing
What does the treatment involve?
Treatment is carried out directly on the skin using gentle, precise and rhythmic movements.
Depending on your needs, treatment can focus on areas such as the face, neck, abdomen, arms or legs, or be used as a more general full-body lymphatic treatment.
No oils or massage creams are used, allowing the skin to be gently stretched and moved during treatment.
MLD is a very light treatment and is suitable for clients who prefer a gentle approach rather than deeper massage.
